A Heartwarming Journey: Howard and Paula Brown’s Dedication to Meals on Wheels Montgomery County

By: Heather Robertson

In the heart of Montgomery County, Texas, a remarkable couple has been making a significant  difference in the lives of seniors and homebound individuals. Howard and Paula Brown,  volunteers with Meals on Wheels Montgomery County (MOWMC), have been spreading joy,  one meal at a time, since 2019. Their story is a testament to the power of compassion and the  profound impact of community service.

A Retirement Filled with Purpose

When Howard retired in 2019, he and Paula were eager to find a meaningful way to spend their  time. With Howard’s love for cooking and eating, Meals on Wheels seemed like a natural fit.  “Food brings people together,” Howard explains. “I figured, what would be more fun than to  bring people food?” This simple yet powerful motivation led them to embark on a journey that  would touch countless lives.

More Than Just a Meal

For the Browns, volunteering with MOWMC is about much more than delivering food. Howard  emphasizes, “It’s more than just a meal. We talk to them, get to know them, spend a little time.  You visit with them.” This personal connection is what makes their service so impactful. They  bring hot, nutritious meals to their clients, but just as important, they also bring companionship  and cheer to brighten their clients’ days.

Memorable Moments

Their volunteer work has led to some unforgettable experiences. Howard recounts a  heartwarming story about helping a senior client get his book signed by local celebrity Roy  Harris, a former boxer and county clerk. This act of kindness brought immense joy to the client,  showcasing how small gestures can make a big difference in someone’s life.

A Deeper Understanding of Community Needs

Volunteering has opened the Browns’ eyes to the challenges faced by many in their community.  They’ve encountered individuals living in dire conditions, including a client without running  water and another residing in a houseboat. These experiences have reinforced their belief in the  importance of their work and the critical need for community support.

A Call to Action

Howard and Paula’s advice to potential volunteers is simple: “Do it.” They’ve made volunteering  a part of their routine, turning it into a “date with a purpose” by delivering meals and going out to  lunch together afterward. This approach has strengthened their bond and allowed them to give  more to their community.

The Ripple Effect of Kindness

The Browns’ commitment to service has inspired others, including Paula’s brother and sister-in law, who now also volunteer with MOWMC. Howard believes that if more people volunteered,  it would lead to “a lot more kindness in this world, which would improve our community.”

The Rewards of Giving Back

For Howard and Paula, the most rewarding aspect of volunteering is the connections they form.  “I just love seeing their faces,” Howard says. “They’re happy to see us. We’ve really become a  community.” This sense of belonging and purpose enriches the lives of those they serve and their  own.

As Howard and Paula continue their journey with MOWMC, they stand as shining examples of  how individuals can significantly impact their community. Their story reminds us that  sometimes, the simplest acts of kindness – like delivering a meal with a smile – can be the most  powerful. They invite others to join them in this rewarding experience, proving that together, we  can create a more compassionate and connected community.
